Exemplar Furniture - Handmade Contemporary Furniture

Exemplar Furniture is Ian Smith and Ian Smith is Exemplar Furniture

I started Exemplar to share my designs, ideas and my work with you. I spent three years studying Furniture Design and Cabinet Making at the Rycotewood Furniture Centre in Oxford

My ideas and work have developed during this time with a strong interest in using traditional materials in new and exciting ways. I have also been keen to embrace the sustainability issues surrounding all manufacturing. This has led me to mainly use traditional and sustainable materials like wood and leather as my medium. Using these materials I aim to create new and original work around my core values

Ian Smith Furniture Designer and Maker - Oxford, England

During my studying I have distilled my ideas and understanding of design down to a few simple words that I use to define my work, these are -

Simplicity, Elegance, Form

I use these as a guide for all of my designs and ideas, aiming to meet each one with all of my work.

At the end of my final year I received the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers Award

My One Oak Seat was on tour as part of the Sylva Foundation One Oak display, it has been displayed at Art in Action and the Oxford Natural History Museum

During 2011 and 2012 I was Artist in Residence at the Rycotewood Furniture Centre. During this time I undertook work at their workshops in Oxford

Prior to this I had a successful 22 year career in the construction industry, initially working in architecture for various architect practices, I then undertook construction project management. I am also a member of the Chartered Institute of Builders
